Skin Biopsy

A skin lesion biopsy is a simple medical procedure in which a sample of your skin is removed and tested in a laboratory. It is performed to help determine the cause of growth, sore, or rash. This could include: changing moles, chronic bacterial or fungal skin infection, noncancerous growths, precancerous cells, skin cancer, rashes, or blistering skin conditions
There are four commonly performed types of skin biopsy-

• Shave biopsies- A small section of the skin’s top layer is removed with a special razor blade or scalpel.
• Punch biopsies- A small, tube-like instrument with a sharp end is used that works like a cookie-cutter. The right sample amount will be retrieved from tweezers, and the incision will be closed with a single stitch.
• Excision biopsies- This is to remove entire areas of abnormal-looking skin. The incision is made as deeply as necessary, removing the entire lesion. After this, several stitches are used to close the wound.
• Incisional biopsy- This is to remove a small part of a large lesion; the procedure is the same as per excisional biopsy.
